Note: Murray had considered and rejected the word appendicitis in 1891 on the grounds that it was 'crack-jaw jargon', an omission for whch the OED became notorious when Edward VII's coronation was postponed in 1902 because of the removal of his appendix (see K. M. E. Murray 1977: 221-2). Baldwin's mention of panel doctor along with appendicitis indicates that the omission of panel doctor must have excited similar comment, though since the fascicle for P-Pargeted was published in 1904 Murray could not have included the term (it refers to the official list of doctors in a district who accepted patients under the National Health Insurance Act of 1913, afterwards superseded by the National Health Service Act of 1946). |
