Here is a record of the history of this site and the main additions and changes to it. Please use the site map or search function if you can't find what you are looking for.
- January 2013: EOED website archived while work on re-launch in new format is underway.
- December 2011-January 2012: completion of new pages in OED editions, updates and revisions: Which edition contains what? on past history of OED, and, on the changes from 2000 onwards, OED Online and OED3, Re-launched OED Online, Loss of OED2, New search tools, Links to HTOED, Case study: terms for lesbian(ism), Changes to unrevised OED2, Case study: catamite, Other changes.
- October 2011: new section of Archived pages created, to store EOED pages now
out-of-date or substantially re-written following the re-launch of OED Online. Work begun on new version of OED editions, updates and revisions:
new pages describing the successive editions of the Dictionary from 1928
to the present day and their distinctive contents.
- Summer 2011 onwards: updating process embarked on in response to the re-launch of the OED Online website in December 2010, which introduced major changes into the representation of OED and the material and search tools available to users.
- December 2009-January 2010: new pages on OED's treatment of specific female writers of the long eighteenth century published, beginning with introduction at 18th century and an account of recording conventions at Reading and recording. Thereafter:
- Jean Adam: contains pages on the OED record of the ballad 'There's Nae Luck About the House', Adam's collection Miscellany Poems, and Unrecorded words and usages in her work - New words or senses, Antedatings, Postdatings, and those plugging OED's 18c gap or Early 18c gap)
- Penelope Aubin: contains pages on Aubin and the OED, her Unrecorded words or usages, and those plugging OED's 18c gap or Early 18c gap
- Anna Seward: contains pages on (i) Seward's poetry, Justified neglect?, lists of Unrecorded usages in her poetry - New words or senses, Antedatings, Postdatings, and those plugging OED's 18c gap or reducing it (18c top-up); and (ii) Seward's letters, along with discussion of First quotations, Hapax legomena, and Seward and OED3
- Further pages on Women's distinctive vocabulary (Distaff and kitchen and Courtship and marriage) and on Men and women compared.
- February 2009: article by John Simpson, 'Why is the OED so small?' added to Library.
- January 2009: new section opened up on Culture and society; section on 'Sources: literary authors' re-named Writers and the dictionary; article by John Simpson, 'Will the Oxford English Dictionary be more "European" after its first comprehensive revision since its first edition of 1884-1928?', added to Library. Photo of Elisabeth Murray, plus text of Oswyn Murray's address at her memorial service, added to her Who's who portrait.
- July 2008: minor changes to page on OED editions; Hapax legomena and first cited uses added to Auden in the OED Supplement.
- June 2008: page on Auden in the OED Supplement added to Auden section in Sources: literary authors.
- May 2008: page on Defining basic words, reproducing letter from Murray to Furnivall (21 Sept. 1909) in which he discusses 'lexicographical postulates'.
- February 2008: page on Auden and dictionaries added to Auden section in Sources: literary authors, and a range of new material, mostly photos, added to Historical documents section: the OED1 spoof slip for radium, photos of Murray's Oxford house and its blue plaque, 40 Walton Crescent and its quotations room, Supplement staff in 1971 and 1974-6, Burchfield in 1972, and the first volume of the Supplement rolling off the press the same year.
- January 2008: new photos added to Historical documents and Who's who sections: of Murray, the Old Ashmolean staff, Murray's staff (including his two daughters), the aged Craigie, Burchfield, and W. C. Minor.
- December 2007: new section opened up on Literary sources, with sub-sections on The canon, Indexes and inconsistencies, Connotation vs. denotation, Writers and dictionaries, and Treasure-house. Also new photos added - of Henry Bradley, Murray's successors (including the older Bradley), and a basket of OED1 slips.
- October 2007: new biographies (some with photos) of R. W. Burchfield, R. W. Chapman, W. A. Craigie, Roland Hall, Kenneth Sisam, W. W. Skeat, R. C. Trench, and J. M. Wyllie added to Who's who section; more material on Roland Hall added to expanded version of Individuals page in Readers and reading section.
- July 2007: new biographies of Henry Bradley and C. T. Onions added to Who's who section.
June 2007: new section created, Who's who, with brief biographies of some of the major OED personages mentioned on the EOED site. First up are Herbert Coleridge, Furnivall, Fitzedward Hall, Laski, Minor, James Murray, Elisabeth Murray, Peter Wexler. - April 2007: new page on OED1's coverage of 19th century sources, plus re-configuring of graphs in our page on OED3's treatment of the period 1500-1899 (part of our section on OED3).
- February 2007: new images added to 1928 banquet section under OED1's completion: speeches by Craigie, Pope and Pember added to that of Baldwin.
- January 2007: new page on OED3's treatment of the period 1500-1599.
- December 2006: updated page on Lexicographical reservations about recording literary language, and further new images added to Historical documents section: the September 1915 edition of The Periodical (OUP's in-house journal), published to mark Murray's death that year, and the February 1928 edition of The Periodical, published to mark OED's completion thirteen years later.
- October-November 2006: new images added to Historical documents section: the Philological Society’s Proposal of 1859, Professor Max Müller's advice to the OUP Delegates in 1878, Murray's Directions to Readers of 1879, and the programme (including menu) and seating plan for the banquet held in the Goldsmiths' Hall, London, to celebrate the completion of the first edition of OED in 1928.
- July 2006: new pages on Wills and inventories and Online sources added to the OED3 section of Initial results.
- June 2006: new page on OED3 1150-1400 added to the OED3 section of Initial results, together with new page on the 18th century (under Period coverage).
- April 2006: new graph (on OED2 quotations for Wordsworth, Scott, & co) added to Initial practice.
- March 2006: two new sections added to Historical documents: (1) OED1's compilation, containing facsimile of one of F. J. Furnivall's notebooks (1861), together with commentary, also pages from one of the early printed lists of books and readers (1861); and (2) Photos: of Herbert Coleridge and the other main editors of OED, and of Murray and his family. Pages on OED3, in Initial results, updated with new material and analyses; third section on Early progress added to OED1 source collection; Period coverage added under Role of quotations, along with first two sub-sections: Medieval and Early Modern.
- January 2006: new section created for Historical documents, containing images of original documents (with commentary as appropriate) from the OED archives and elsewhere: initial items added on 1928 banquet. Two short notes added to descriptions of How to search OED: one on 'First quotations' and one on hapax legomena.
- November 2005-January 2006: more items added to Library (by Gilliver, Simpson, Silva, and others).
- October 2005: further items in Role of quotations/OED1 intellectual climate: Language and morality and Language and usage. New subsection in Role of quotations: OED1 source collection, including pages on Initial aims and Initial practice. Library added, containing initial selection of downloadable articles on the OED.
- September 2005: Site map added and Bibliography reorganized into separate pages.
- August 2005: Role of quotations added - material under The World and the Book, Johnson, C. Richardson, and OED intellectual climate published. (More to come on Source collection, Period coverage, Readers and reading, etc.) Glossary published.
- June 2005: Mambo site launched, with new material published in Initial results (e.g. on Fe/male sources and Literary sources).
- April 2005: original site launched (still available here).
